Acceptance.

There is a joyous, still peace that exists in the release. Like mist gently cascading amongst its kinfolk in the rainforest. Like breathing pure hydrogen (two parts) oxygen directly from the breath of God's lungs. Like the intoxication of one’s eyes with the beauty of one's feet making love to the sand at the invitation of the ocean hand painted in the shade of lovers’ teal by the artistry of the clouds...

I wish this for you. I wish that you feel this again. forever. always.

My Mama “The Fitness Queen” and my Journey to Wellness.

I can remember being a small child watching my Mama exercise. She had every Denise Austin workout video cassette tape ever created. She was the Step Aerobics queen, with the leotard and tights as her scepter and crown. When I was old enough, we would go on evening walks in Audubon Park in uptown New Orleans. She always walked faster than me and I would always have to sprint at times to keep up with her.  At some point, teenage laziness, a preoccupation with boys and a general lack of interest and concern for my body set in some years later and continued on into my college years.

Although my weight flip flopped during my years at Howard, I finally got serious about the weight loss thing around the age of 24 or 25. One of my closest friends and I responded to a steeply discounted gym membership ad began feverishly working out. We lost some weight and we bonded, however it also marked a moment when we began to take our bodies more seriously and pay closer attention to our weight.

This also marks the time when I decided to start running, something I now cannot imagine my life without (will share my love affair with running in a later post).

We like to use the excuse that “life happened” when things occur in our lives that throw us off track. This is none more applicable to circumstances – work, relationships and a fast and furious social life – that led to eventual weight gain during my grad school years.

During my second year of graduate school on a visit to the on campus doctor, as with any doctor’s visit I had to get on the scale. The nurse informed me that the scale had informed her that there were 204 pounds of me standing in front of her.

204.

I could not believe that at 27 years old I was tipping the scale at over 200 pounds.  The doctor came in and before we discussed the actual issue that I had come in to see her about, we talked about my weight. She showed me a chart that indicated what my target weight was for my age and height, which was at least a 50 pound difference.  At that time it was not even feasible to me that I could get down to the weight that she showed me. I had only remembered being that weight in middle school.

And thus, the fitness train left the station again. I started taking my weight loss even more seriously when I met my  now-Husband and got engaged to be married. I knew I wanted to be a thinner Bride and took the steps I needed to get there.

My journey that started as a little girl has taken some twists and turns, with a lot more clarity and intention since I’ve crossed the threshold of thirty. I realize now that the weight loss struggle has primarily been one of the mind. It has been a battle of self-love and reconciling knowledge and understanding - culminating in a winding-path journey toward a more evolved, improved version of myself.

I now care about what I eat because I care about the foods I put in my body and what they do to my body once they are in my digestive track and blood system. With the help and support of many, I have started to learn what it truly means to embrace a lifestyle centered on movement, wellness and honoring your body. I consistently make time for moving my body because my body needs to move - not only for weight loss goals and sculpting, but for my mental and emotional state and my body’s optimal performance.

I now think about food and exercise as the physical manifestation of the preservation of my mind and body. That doesn’t mean I don’t have a piece of chocolate or French fries every once in a while, but it does mean that I’m doing an increasingly better job of choosing better options more regularly and being okay with those decisions.

How do you honor your body? What are some of the habits you can get rid of – and habits you can develop that reflects physical health and wellness as a priority?

BECKONED.

Spirit roams, searches, seeks out peering into the vastness of much with limited sight and endless belief. Endeavoring to find sparks. Of sunlight. Full moons. Pebbles of gentle streams weaving their way through densely woven forestry uncorrupted and pure.

The weight of the senses looms heavily, perfectly engineered to deconstruct at some unknown time and place, releasing contained light marvelously content to travel toward the direction of its source.

A quenchable need lingers on....endlessly sought, momentarily satiated. Ever traveling, ever loved, ever more.

What Nina Said.

"I choose to reflect the time and the situations in which I find myself. That is my beauty."

Nina Simone

In this quote, Nina Simone summarizes and defends her purpose and her art, makes a definitive choice and creates the parameters for her beauty. Her beauty is a reflection of her personal choice and decisions. She is not bending or trying to fit into a mold that was crafted for her by an outside entity.  It is not something the world can judge or measure. It is not something that will easily fade or dissipate. It is authentic. It is her truth, radiating from within.

When I finally got the courage to start this journey, it came from a place inside of me that was seeking authenticity and truth. It was the marked beginning of a commitment to do what Nina did- choose and commit to a purpose and define key constructs and ideas for myself.

Love Thyself is a reflection of the times that I find myself in. It is how I choose to see and define myself as a woman. It is a collection of ideas and thoughts that I believe will resonate with other women on a similar journey. It is an exploration of the belief in the trifecta of light, love and beauty shaped from within, and the potency to create reverberating change in ourselves, our relationships, our communities and the world.

On the one year anniversary of introducing this idea to the world, I realized that time will run circles around us if we're not paying close attention. I realized that even the most convicting, well intentioned plans require a daily refresh and commitment.

Over the next year and beyond, I hope to explore and share the imperfect but beautiful reflection of the experiences and ideas central to Love Thyself. My hope is that you who may read this will gather and repurpose within yourselves a commitment to making a definitive choice to love yourself and define your beauty by embracing and radiating your light and truth.

Leah

Black Angel In Flight

Methodical. Intense. Burning, Yearning, Release.
Brazenly defiant. Mercilessly intent.
Relentlessly focused. Awake. Alive.
Intolerable and hopeful.
Sensual and opaque.
Enraptured, untouchable, unstoppable, eternal.
Beauty.
Vision.
The future. The present. The past.
Awed. Inspired. Enraged. In love.
Undeniable. Divine.

A Journey to Love.

Love Thyself was literally a gift from God. After an intense period of fasting, the vision for this concept was downloaded at the speed of light into my mind.

The acute clarity of everything I saw was confirmation that it was straight from the Creator.  Everything I saw and felt was clear. What I did not see at the time were the exact, calculated steps to take in order to see it come to fruition. Since that time, making the leap from concept to something tangible has been an exercise in faith; or more like a dance of bachata swaying between faith and doubt, uncertainty and strength, resolve and retreat. That 'dance' involved the constant deliberation of things like:

"How can I move forward if I'm still not exactly sure of how the path looks? Will people receive this? Will it resonate? Am I capable of executing this vision the way God intended? "

Although I'm still working through that faith exercise, I want to share this gift with you.

What is Love Thyself?
It is an embracing of the abundance of beauty that God has placed within us. A beauty that is not fully apparent to the world until we are able to see it, love it and boldly declare it for ourselves.

Love Thyself acknowledges that when women travel within to embrace, appreciate and love themselves - mind, body and spirit - God's light breaks through, power is unleashed, fear is conquered and whole communities are transformed.

In spite of the doubt, what I've eventually come to realize is that this is not a destination, nor is it a consciousness level that I've yet achieved or a pinnacle that I have reached. I realized that this is not about me being an expert or guru preaching from a pulpit.  It's an opportunity to connect and grow with other women who might just struggle with some of the same things that I do. It is a journey, taken one step at a time.

There is much more to come as this set of ideals grows wings and learns to fly, but for now, this is what matters most. Let's explore this together.

Love + Light,

Leah
